What You Need to Know About a Chemical Peel
A chemical peel involves using a chemical solution to remove the top layer of a person's skin. It is a skin-resurfacing procedure, and the new skin that regrows is often younger looking and smoother. Chemical peels are used to address a variety of cosmetic issues, like scars, skin discoloration and wrinkles. The procedure is effective on its own or when combined with other treatments.
Chemical peels are performed at varying depths. It can be deep, medium or light, depending on the issues the patient is trying to eliminate. Deeper chemical peels tend to produce the best results, but they also come with longer recovery times. Different chemicals are used for each type of chemical peel.
Who needs a chemical peel?
A chemical peel can be used to deal with many skin issues. Here are a few problems that different types of chemical peels can resolve.
Light peel: This type of peel is used to peel off the outer layer of the patient's skin. It can be performed to treat acne, dryness, wrinkles and uneven skin tones. This type of peel is often repeated for best results.
Medium peel: During this procedure, the upper part of the middle layer of skin is removed along with the epidermis. A medium peel is used to deal with more serious cases of acne scars, uneven skin tone and wrinkles.
Deep peel: This involves removing skin cells from the mid layer of the dermis and the epidermis. It is used to remove deep scars, wrinkles and precancerous tumors. Deep chemical peels are normally only performed once.
What to expect when getting a chemical peel
A chemical peel is an outpatient procedure. It is normally done in an outpatient facility or a clinic. To start off the procedure, the doctor will clean the patient's face and cover their eyes with goggles, tape or an ointment. The doctor will also ensure the patient's hair does not get in the way during the procedure.
Anesthetics are not used for most chemical peels unless it is the deep variety. Sedatives and painkillers are enough to alleviate any discomfort experienced.
During the treatment:
- The doctor will apply a chemical solution that contains salicylic acid or glycolic acid to the patient's face, which whitens it
- The patient might experience a mild sting while the solution is on their skin
- A neutralizer is used to wash the chemical off the person's face afterward
- In the case of a medium peel, there is no need for a neutralizer
- If a deep peel is being performed, intravenous fluids will be administered and the patient's heart rate will be monitored
- Carbolic acid is used for deep peels
